grandma memories

Since I could not make it down to Poland in time for my grandma’s funeral, yes I know I’m a terrible grandson, the least I could do is put together some of the best pictures I have depicting my grandma, a person I always believed to be much greater than life. If I ever become just one hundredth the person that she was I will have lived an amazing life. Rest in peace grandma and watch over us down here.

WMC 2010 Recap - Part 2

It’s been a few weeks since Miami so I better jot down some the parties and events I attended before my memory fails me. I got into town a little late on Wednesday and since I did not have time to grab my official WMC badge I stuck mostly to smaller events that night. I stopped off at the Chelsea Hotel for some Afrique Electrique, which with some good beats and live PAs was quite a treat. I also dropped by Ocean’s Ten for a few beats courtesy of the French Connexion, before finally finishing off the night at the Shelborne Hotel with Josh Wink, Doc Martin, Sneak, and a few others. While the show was pretty good, I’m just not a big fan of the Shelborne Hotel as a venue. The main room always gets super crowded, hot, and is simply hard to navigate - even heading to the bathrooms which are located along the outside pool area becomes a hassle.

The next day started out with a little time at the official WMC Pool Party at the Eden Roc Renaissance Hotel with the likes of Funkagenda and Afrojack. Later I stopped off at the CityDeep Music Showcase at the Beach Plaza Hotel, which hosted by the Basic NYC crew is never a disappointment. On the other hand the Stereo Night Club event at the Living Room was a big disappointment. I’m not referring to the DJs, hector Romero, Hex Hector, and so on, nor the music per se, but the venue is simply sub-par. The two main rooms are in such proximity that music from both rooms overlaps, making it hard for either DJ to pursue a particular mood. The bouncers kept a long a long line outside while on inside the club there was barely a soul. Which might have been an ok thing to do given the fact that the bathrooms were almost non-functional – verdict: avoid this venue in the future. Eventually ended up heading over to the Chelsea Hotel once more, which proved to be a good decision since the vibe over there was significantly better. Overall I find that I prefer smaller venues and smaller crowds more and more as time goes on.

WMC 2010 Recap - Part 1

Every couple of years I mange to make it out to the Winter Music Conference (WMC) in Miami, to enjoy life, listen to some good music, and make a few new friends. This time around I stayed at the Crest Hotel and Suites which was located off of James Avenue and Lincoln Road. The location of the hotel was fantastic in that a lot of parties and events during WMC take place between 1st street and 25th street, and as such are easily walk-able particularly in the mild Miami spring weather. The actual conference this year was held at the Eden Roc Hotel, which is a terrific venue, however it also is located on the 45th block which is a bit far from south beach. However, buses run regularly up and down Collins and a ride will set you back a meager two dollars each way. But I digress, other than the stellar location, the Crest Hotel had also very comfortable and clean rooms, and unlike a lot of the hotels in the south beach area, the walls were not paper thin so that one could enjoy a nice rest when needed. The front lobby was modern, clean, and the front porch area was large and enjoyable. The crest Hotel is a no thrills place, so don’t expect a fancy pool or a swanky bar, but at least it had free wifi which I find criminal when not provided by a hotel. The only hotel issue that I experiences was a 12 hour period without hot water, which was mildly annoying, but at least it was fixed within a reasonable amount of time. Given that the main purpose of a hotel is to provide a place to sleep and shower, I would have expected a little more than a $20 discount for the day without hot water. But that is something I will take up with the hotel corporate office – On that note, I really don’t get people that get all rude with the front desk because the discount was less than they expected. Hello, you are dealing with a person that has limited say in these decisions, spend your energy on dealing with the big cats at the corporate office, trust me, it will get you much farther on average.
