a day at the dermatologist

E-mail Print PDF

I've been putting off a visit to a dermatologist for way too long. Not that I've been having any serious issues or anything, but there have always have been a few small things here and there that I wanted to get checked out. So I walked into the dermatologist's office this afternoon with nice list of have a dozen issues to be addressed. The dermatologist surely did not waste much time and went right to work on several parts of my body:

First of all, it turned out that I had a little wart on my left hand that needed to be frozen. I had some small warts in the past, and so when he suggested freezing the wart I was not really surprised. What did surprise me was the amount of freezing he applied, for a second there I thought he was going to freeze a hole through my hand. With this out of the way, he proceeded to examine a rash that I've had on my arms since I've been a little kid. As it turns out, this condition is known as Keratosis Polaris, and can be found to some degree or another in about forty percent of the word's population. It is caused by a plug of dead skin cells that form at the site of a hair follicle. And while there is no real cure for it, I learned that exfoliating the skin with mild peeling agents and applying moisturizers tend to make it less visible. Finally, he removed a couple of big moles from my back to perform a biopsy on them. I did not realize they still used to good old shaving razors to perform that procedure. I think I definitely got my co-pays worth at the dermatologist today and am scheduled for a follow up in about four months.

Tomorrow I have a dentist appointment to get my two temporary crowns replaced with the ceramic ones. I hope there will be no more complication, since I've already spent way too much time at the dentist this year. I will also have to figure out why my insurance company has declined payment on a $1,300 bill from my previous visits!
