hooked on DVRs

E-mail Print PDF

I never though I would admit it, but I'm officially hooked on digital video recorders (DVRs). It took a while but it has very much alerted the way in which I watch television. Rarely if ever do I watch any show or events live anymore. DVRs can record hours upon hours of video so I just let it record anything that might seem interesting and check it out when I have some spare time. I no longer waste time channel surfing since there is bound to be something interesting that has been recorded. Even better, I no longer have to sit through lengthy commercials, time-outs, and otherwise annoying content since all of can be skipped with a push of a button. I dont watch more television as some might suspect, but rather absorb a lot more higher quality content in probably less time. Another major benefit; I no longer have to schedule my days around shows I did not want to miss. I suppose all of the above could be accomplished with a simple VCR in the end, but a DVR makes it a million times easier and more convenient, thus more enjoyable as well. I think this year marks the first time that Ive not missed a single tennis match at the Australian Open because of this cool device.

On a related note, I still think that cable and internal access in this country is way too expensive. Countries like Japan and South Korea have broadband speeds that are several times faster than ours in the US, but customers pay about half of what we do here. It should really be of no surprise if the next generation of Internet entrepreneurs emerges from these countries over the next few years. Im also looking forward to IPTV and hope that at some point Ill have the option to select TV channels a la carte and will only have to pay for channels that I really care about.
