Motorola V180This is my new toy, a Motorola V180 cell phone. It's not a great cell phone by any means but, hey, my wireless provider sent it to me for free after I did some complaining, so I really cannot complain anymore for a while at least. It is an upgrade over my phone in terms of features in that it has a color LCD and the ring tones also sound a lot better. But it definitely is a downgrade in terms of usability and ease of use. And I'm not only saying that because I'm used to my previous phone, but simply because Motorola is really retarded when it comes to making phones functional. Two prime examples: First, almost two years after I had my last Motorola phone, they still have not figured out a good way to store multiple numbers for a singe user. Yes, you can assign different icons and what not to particular name to specify if it is a cell phone number or office number, etc., but if you have a friend that has two or three numbers, you will still see his/her name show up in the phone book three times. Second, there is no way to switch between different ring modes without opening the phone, which is very annoying.

Anyhow, enough about cell phones; I find it funny that some politicians, such as our current president, are in denial that the economy is still in a sorry shape. Sure they can claim that jobs have been created, the problem is that a lot of the jobs that have been created are not the high income, high-tech jobs that are going to keep this country in the lead. Sure, small businesses will keep people employed and will put food on the table for some and even make others rich, but they will rarely create patents or bring forth Nobel price worthy breakthroughs. Meanwhile, high-tech companies are continuing to shed jobs; my company is going to layoff about a 1000 people over the next few months.

On another note, anyone interested in doing some development at topcoder.com send me a note. There are several projects out there right now I would not mind doing but it is just too much work for one person. So if you feel motivate let me know.
