Over the Labor Day weekend Tina and I, as well as several friends, intended to head down to South Padre Island in south-east Texas, just above the border with Mexico. First problem turned out to be a realization that most of our friends are, well, lame and boring. Out of over twenty people that seemed initially interested and even excited about the idea, we got a solid commitment from none, and a maybe from a total of two. Of course, lack of companions would not stop us, but then we got dealt a double whammy when the weather forecast called for three days of continuous stroms in South Padre Island over that very weekend. Thus, instead of heading out east, we decided to pull a complete u-turn and head out west towards Fredericksburg, which is known as a German town in Texas, sort of like Helen in Georgia. Well, Fredericksburg did not turn out to be all that, or in other words, it takes about ten minutes to take in most of the town. The only mention worthy structure is the Catholic Church near the town square, and the adjacent gardens which host several unique statues. Nevertheless, we still managed to walk around for hours through numerous side streets and had a very enjoyable time. What the town lacks in character, though, it makes up for with some fairly good German restaurants. The place we ate at was called Der Lindenbaum, and the Wiener schnitzel as well as the Jeager schnitzel that it served were excellent indeed. The highlight of the trip however, turned out to be the drive between Austin and Fredericksburg itself. The route is filled with many vineyards, each of which has at least one or two unique wines. We ended up spending a lot more money on wines than we initially intended, simply because all of them were quite tasty. In addition to some traditional wines such as the Rose and Merlot, we also picked up a peach wine, a raspberry wine, and a liebchen wine. The only thing that we missed out on was a honey wine, since the particular vineyard that produced it underestimated the demand. Overall the trip ended up being quite a lot of fun, and the pictures should be up in a few days.
