It’s been a few weeks since Miami so I better jot down some the parties and events I attended before my memory fails me. I got into town a little late on Wednesday and since I did not have time to grab my official WMC badge I stuck mostly to smaller events that night. I stopped off at the Chelsea Hotel for some Afrique Electrique, which with some good beats and live PAs was quite a treat. I also dropped by Ocean’s Ten for a few beats courtesy of the French Connexion, before finally finishing off the night at the Shelborne Hotel with Josh Wink, Doc Martin, Sneak, and a few others. While the show was pretty good, I’m just not a big fan of the Shelborne Hotel as a venue. The main room always gets super crowded, hot, and is simply hard to navigate - even heading to the bathrooms which are located along the outside pool area becomes a hassle.
The next day started out with a little time at the official WMC Pool Party at the Eden Roc Renaissance Hotel with the likes of Funkagenda and Afrojack. Later I stopped off at the CityDeep Music Showcase at the Beach Plaza Hotel, which hosted by the Basic NYC crew is never a disappointment. On the other hand the Stereo Night Club event at the Living Room was a big disappointment. I’m not referring to the DJs, hector Romero, Hex Hector, and so on, nor the music per se, but the venue is simply sub-par. The two main rooms are in such proximity that music from both rooms overlaps, making it hard for either DJ to pursue a particular mood. The bouncers kept a long a long line outside while on inside the club there was barely a soul. Which might have been an ok thing to do given the fact that the bathrooms were almost non-functional – verdict: avoid this venue in the future. Eventually ended up heading over to the Chelsea Hotel once more, which proved to be a good decision since the vibe over there was significantly better. Overall I find that I prefer smaller venues and smaller crowds more and more as time goes on.
Friday once gain began with the official WMC pool party which featured the likes of Timo Maas, Sneak, and of course many others. I meant to stop off at Pete Tong’s Pool Party as well, but never made it there, but from what I heard it was a decent party as well. Next on the Agenda was the Beatport Beach Party at the Gansevoort Hotel. The venue was actually quite cool and open with plenty of restrooms, the major problem was that throughout the early afternoon there were plenty of rain showers drenching this outdoor event and much of the speakers and equipment had to be covered up. And while all the showers did not stop the dedicated crowd from dancing, as you can imagine, the sound quality was a little sub-par. However, once the rain showers moved on the party only got better and better as the night went on. In the evening I hit up the MN2S 15th Anniversary party at Klutch. The venue was very nicely setup up, I took quite a few pictures trying to capture the vibe although I’m not sure I succeeded, and the music was quite good as well, although a little bit below what I was expecting. I would have stuck around longer most likely where it not for a few god friends of mine whom I have not seen in a while and who insisted that I meet them at a small private party at the Piano Lounge. After some catching up we then finished off the night at the Shelborne Hotel once again with some Dave Seaman and Nick Warren.
On Saturday I decided to start out the day with some smaller events once again. I stopped off at the Whitelaw Hotel first and then headed over to Sweat party at Hotel Shelley. The guys from the Sweat crew were some really cool cats and from all the parties I attended over the course of the few days in Miami this little get together had probably the best vibe of them all. The deep house music was fantastic, courtesy of Beppe Gioia, Ray Vasquez and Rork to mentiona a few, and the crowd on hand absolutely ate it up. Props to Cavin Morgan and the ATL crew for putting this great event together.Once I got my deep house fill I headed to the 2nd day of the Beatport party to catch up with a few more friends whatnot. In the evening I headed over the Porterhouse party at B.E.D to catch Steven Porter and Dave Spoon. Finally, exhausted by not done, I stopped by the Salted Music Party at Pure to check out Miguel Migs and Lisa Shaw. It was a very good way to end the last night in Mami, although I have to say that I’ve seen much better sets by Miguel Migs in the past, but still nothing to complain about. On Sunday it was time for me to head home, so other than bumming around on the beach for a bit and hitting up one last roof top party at the Bentley Hotel I took it rather easy that day. Shout outs go to Ricki, Brett, Rome, Lynn, Ericka, Kelley, James, Will, Joe, Sandra, and all the other peeps that made this trip a lot of fun – looking forward to hopefully being back once again next year!
